Blue Bag Recycling Contamination

September 17, 2025

The States of Guernsey Refuse and Recycling teams are increasing their checks on blue recycling bags to tackle contamination. Items that should not be placed in the blue bags can cause whole loads of recycling to be rejected, leading to unnecessary waste and higher processing costs.

What this means for you:

  • Refuse teams will be carrying out more frequent inspections of blue bags.
  • Bags found to contain non-recyclable items may be left behind, with a green sticker explaining the problem.
  • Continued contamination could lead to further enforcement measures.

Please remember – Blue Bags are only for clean, dry recyclable items such as:

  • Milk and juice cartons
  • Plastic bottles, pots, tubs, and trays
  • Metal tins and cans
  • Foil

Do not place in Blue Bags:

  • General Waste
  • Food waste
  • Plastic film, carrier bags, bubble wraps or wrappers
  • Pet / Baby Food Pouches
  • Coal Sacks
  • Plastic Toys
  • Paint Pots
  • Black Plastic
  • Table Blister Packs
  • Crisp Packets

By taking a little extra care when sorting your waste, you help keep Guernsey’s recycling system efficient and cost-effective, while also protecting our environment.
